Why nine homes, and nine creatures

When people first hear that each home at Lokah is modelled on a creature, they smile — and then they ask which one they should stay in. It is the right question, and it does not have an obvious answer. Each of the nine homes borrows something from its creature. The Cocoon wraps you softly and holds the warmth. The Hive is all shared light and honeyed wood, made for a table full of people. The Weave catches the afternoon in a lattice of shadow. The Shore opens wide and lets the outside pour in. We did not want nine copies of the same room with different names. We wanted nine ways of being here — nine moods, nine instincts. The architecture followed the animal, not the other way around. So when you ask which home is yours, we usually ask a question back. Do you want to be held, or to be opened up? To gather, or to disappear for a while? The creature you are drawn to is rarely an accident.
